Book Quotes

"Questions are places in your mind where answers fit. If you haven't asked the question, the answer has nowhere to go." Clay Christensen

That's a quote that gets me thinking.

"I don't think the reader should be indulged as a consumer, because he isn't one. Literature that indulges the tastes of the reader is a degraded literature. My goal is to disappoint the usual expectations and inspire new ones." Elena Ferrante

Definitely. Those are the best books.

"Reading is not a value in itself! Much more nonsense has been printed since Gutenberg than poor television has been able to broadcast in its 60 years of existence." Helmut Thoma, Austrian media manager

Also true, if you always read the same stuff, you are going nowhere.

    1. Thanks, Lark. There are so many witty and intelligent quotes out there, I just don*t find the time to publish them regularly.

  2. I DO so like a book subverting my expectations! That happened just recently. It was GREAT!

    1. Fantastic, Kitten. Which of those books you read was it? Must have been great.

    2. It was an old SF novel from the 1950's called 'The Black Cloud' by Fred Hoyle. I was expecting a standard 'end-of-the-world' story, but it changed direction TWICE. It was a bit slow in places (essentially people talking in rooms) but I found it entertaining - which is the point of course!

    3. You are right there, Kitten. I will have to read about that book, even though I might not actually get to read it.

  3. The last quote bothers me a little. I am interested in what I am interested in. I can't force myself to read something that I find boring, it will only color my experience and make me not like the book, even if it's actually a great read.

    1. Of course, it doesn't help to read stuff you are not interested in but it doesn't help if you always read the same stuff, you learn nothing. I know you don't belong to that group, on the contrary.

    2. I am pretty set in my ways when it comes to fiction I suppose, but non-fiction is pretty much a free-for-all, lol

  4. The Clay Christensen quote is particularly intriguing. Not quite sure how I feel about it.

    1. I am not always sure whether I agree with the person who said the quote, Jane. But I always find they are worth mentioning and think about.
So, I know what you mean about this.

    1. That is always a good idea, Lydia. There are genres that I don't care for but have read them when they come up in a book club. Some of them were good, others not so much.
