Alphabet Authors ~ T is for Tolstoy

I found this idea on Simon's blog @ Stuck in a Book. He picks an author for each letter of the alphabet, sharing which of their books he's read, which I ones he owns, how he came across them etc.

I might not do it exactly as he does but I will try to get to all the letters of the alphabet over time.

When I had to decide which author I would pick for the letter T, I had to think about Leo Tolstoy right away. He is just one of the greatest authors ever and these are the books I read:

- "Anna Karenina(RUS: Анна Каренина = Anna Karenina) - 1877 *
- "Collected Works. The Stories" (RUS. Gesammelte Werke. Die Erzählungen) - 1886
- "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" (Смерть Ивана Ильича/Smert' Ivána Ilyichá) - Der Tod des Iwan Iljitsch - 1886
- "War and Peace(RUS: Война и мир = Woina i mir) - 1868/69

Facts about Leo Tolstoy:
Born     9 September 1828 Yasnaya Polyana, Russian Empire
Died     20 November 1910 (aged 82) Astapovo, Russian Empire
Married 1862 to Sophie Behrs
They had 13 children of whom eight survived childhood.

He never won the Nobel Prize for Literature or Peace even though he was nominated for both several times.

He was liked and admired by many other authors, especially by Fyodor Dostoevsky whom he greatly admired likewise.

In Russia, he was regarded as a Christian anarchist and excommunicated. However, there are statues of him all over the world. However, the Russians also printed two coins with his portrait, 100 rubles (in gold) in 1991, 1 ruble in1988.

This is part of an ongoing series where I will write about a different author for each letter of the alphabet. You can see them all here.

  1. Even though I've never read any of Tolstoy's books, I think he's a great choice for the letter T. His books are such classics.

    1. For those that love chunky books, Lark. I do, so I have thoroughly enjoyed all his works.

  2. I *tried* to read 'Anna K' some years ago but DNF'd it not too far in. My brother did read 'War & Peace' (which impressed me) but he didn't seem overly impressed (I think he described it as a 'soap opera with a LOT of characters'!). I do have a copy of 'Ivan Ilyich' in a collection of short novels, so I'll get to that eventually. The Little Black Classics set also have some Tolstoy so he's (eventually) going to get two bites of the apple! After that maybe I'll tackle something a bit more substantial... [grin]

    1. I always tell people, read what you enjoy, Kitten. A friend of mine borrowed a Dostoevsky from me a while ago because she said, oh, you're supposed to read that. I said, no, you're not supposed to read anything after having left school. She didn't get through it.

    2. That's very true! There's SO much out there that other people *expect* you to read. Some things you like and some things you don't... I stay (mostly) with what I enjoy and, from time to time, try to push at my boundaries a bit. It's one reason why I bought those boxsets recently - to try new stuff. I've just read two booklets of poetry and didn't like either very much.... But I tried, so that's good. Maybe I'll like some *different* poetry later...

    3. Oh, I love finding and reading new stuff, Kitten. But, most of us here, we read a lot and therefore can try something in between that might not be our thing in the end. But most people read one book a month, at the most, and they want to enjoy that. So, read whatever you like.

  3. I've read several of Tolstoy's shorter works.... I am hoping to finish Anna Karenina someday!

    1. If you liked his short works, Lisa, I am sure you will get to read some of his larger ones one day. Enjoy.
