"Top Ten Tuesday" is an original feature/weekly meme created on the blog "The Broke and the Bookish". It was created because they are particularly fond of lists. It is now hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl.
Since I am just as fond of them as they are, I jump at the chance to share my lists with them! Have a look at their page, there are lots of other bloggers who share their lists here. This week's topic is Books with a High Page Count (Share those doorstop books!))
Good thing that I do the chunky book challenge, so I could find my longest books quickly. Maybe some of you have a different page count (especially if I read the German translation of a foreign book), depending on the edition. But these books all have more than 1,000 pages.
Tolstoy, Leo "War and Peace" (RUS: Война и мир = Woina i mir) - 1868/69 - 2,099 pages
Mak, Geert "In Europe. Travels Through the Twentieth Century" (NL: In Europa: Reizen door de twintigste eeuw) - 2004 - 1,351 pages
Dostoevsky, Fyodor "The Brothers Karamazov" (RUS: Братья Карамазовы) - 1879-80 - 1,249 pages
Follett, Ken "World Without End" - 2007 - 1,237 pages
Dickens, Charles "Bleak House" - 1852/53 - 1,088 pages
Clarke, Susanna "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" - 2004 - 1,024 pages
I don't think I need to mention that I love large books. The bigger the better!!!
📚 Happy Reading 📚
We have one in common.
ReplyDeleteThat's better than some weeks, Deb.
DeleteThe only one of those I've read is 'Jonathan Strange'. I think it took me 6 weeks - but that was only evenings & weekends as I didn't want to take it into work every day. FAR too heavy! [grin]
ReplyDeleteMy 'average' read ATM is 282pp - not long at all! But I do have a 500+ coming up later in the year. I do have much longer books - but I'll need to beef up my review pile first before I attempt them.
A friend of mind reccommended that one to me, but he did NOT say how big it was.
DeleteIts VERY good. The TV adaptation is good too.
DeleteI usually add all the pages up at the end of the year and devide them by the number of books I read. Last year, tat resulted in 346 pages per book.
DeleteBut I can heartily agree with Kitten, that book is well worth reading.
I've only been keeping note of page numbers for around 5 years. The count has been steadily dropping since then and, I expect, should bottom out at around 265pp which seems about the average size of books I read.
DeleteI did pick up a reasonably chunky book yesterday (from my Charity shop) which was 600+ pages on Africa which should be interesting as I hardly know anything about that continent. I was also *delighted* to pick up a copy of 'Istanbul - Memories and the City' by Orhan Pamuk off the Charity shop shelves. I'm continually impressed by the quality of local readers! I'm planning on coupling it with a history of Istanbul & imagine I'll be rather well informed after finishing both of them [grin]
Those are great plans, Kitten. I think you will love Istanbul by Orhan Pamuk, he is a great author and has lived there all his life.
DeleteI find that I still read large books but not as many 750+ ones as I used to. I have now made a list of those books on my TBR pile and hope to get to more of them, at least one at a time.
War and Peace has been a popular pick.
ReplyDeleteTrue, Lydia, I think I saw it on every second list. LOL
DeleteI had Pillars of the Earth on my list today but I also had Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I can't wait to read both :) Great list!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely worth reading, Dini. Enjoy.
DeleteI've read War and Peace and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (which are both on my list today) as well as The Brothers Karamazov! Here is my TTT: https://momobookblog.blogspot.com/2025/08/top-ten-tuesday-high-page-count.html
ReplyDeleteOops lol wrong link xD https://thissideofstoryland.blogspot.com/2025/08/top-ten-tuesday-books-over-1000-pages.html
DeleteThanks, Karis, I'll have a look.
DeleteThese are some great books. I have read any on your list!

Looking forward to seeing your list, Rosie.
DeleteI keep trying to read Undset. I have one of hers, Ida Elisabeth.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read that one, Stephen. But if it's only half as good as Kristin Lavransdatter, you're in for a great read.
DeleteNice list, Marianne!! It was fun to see we have some overlapping books on our list. Happy reading!!
ReplyDeleteI thought so, too, Lisa.
DeleteWow Marianne, these are all so big! Maybe one day I will enjoy bigger books again, but this is not that season. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThat's fine, Cindy. We should all read what we enjoy. For me, the larger the book, the better.
DeleteThe only one of these I have read is Sarum, which was good. I should probably read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell sometime, since I enjoy both fantasy and historical fiction.
ReplyDeleteThat would probably be a great idea, Lark. And I can heartily recommend all of Edward Rutherfurd's books.
DeleteI've read JONATHAN STRANGE, but it's been a long time. I've been meaning to read Follett's books. One of these days!
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
Interesting, how many people have read that book, Susan. I would never have guessed. And the Follett books are fantastic.
DeleteGreat list! You have an amazing attention span to read these!
ReplyDeleteI just like to get into the lives of the characters, Carla. For me, it is often over far too early when I read short books. Or short stories.
DeleteIt is interesting to think how much a book can vary in page numbers depending on paper thickness and print size. My version of War and Peace has just under 1300 pages!
ReplyDeleteNot just the print size. Mine was very small. But it was a German translation, and that's always longer. Or you might have had an abridge version?

ReplyDeleteIt is scary. Well, some of them are old, but there are stilla few newer one. It seems that the less people read, the thicker the book gets.
ReplyDeleteI have decided to, after all, read War and Peace one day.
I am also interested in Clarke, Susanna "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell". I have Sarum on my shelves, but the text is so small. I might try to read it as an ebook. Karamazov is on my shelves, and I hope to read it in October. Der Zaubergerg is also on my list. A few long books there for the future.
Interesting point, Lisbeth. So, you think the books get larger and people read less or the other way around?
DeleteLuckily, I don't have a problem with small print. I am extremely short sighted and therefore can read even without my glasses. If something is too small, I even have to take them off. But everything by Rutherfurd is so great that I recommend reading it on your ebook, if you can.
I have only put books on this list that I really liked, so I wish you good luck with any of them.
I've only read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, but I really liked that one. I wouldn't mind rereading it at some point. :D
ReplyDeleteSame here, Lark. I probably should watch the movie one day. LOL
