Alphabet Authors ~ O is for Oates

I found this idea on
Simon's blog @ Stuck in a Book. He picks an author for each letter of the alphabet, sharing which of their books he's read, which I ones he owns, how he came across them etc. I might not do it exactly as he does but I will try to get to all the letters of the alphabet over time.

This was an easy letter for me. I have read so many books by this author, she is definitely one of my favourites. Joyce Carol Oates. And I say it again and again, give here the
Nobel Prize for Literature.:

- "A Book of American Martyrs" - 2017
"A Widow's Story" - 2011 (a memoir)
"Big Mouth & Ugly Girl" - 2003
- "Black Girl/White Girl" - 2006
- "Blonde" - 2000
- "Carthage- 2014
- "Dear Husband, stories" - 2009 (short stories)
- "The Falls" - 2004

- "The Gravedigger's Daughter" - 2007
- "Jack of Spades. A Tale of Suspense" - 2015
- "Little Bird of Heaven" - 2009

- "The Man Without a Shadow" - 2016
- "Middle Age" - 2001
- "Mudwoman" - 2012

- "The Sacrifice" - 2015
- "Sexy" - 2015
- "We Were the Mulvaneys" - 1996

Facts about Joyce Carol Oates:

This is part of an ongoing series where I will write about a different author for each letter of the alphabet. You can see them all here.

  1. I haven't read any Oates, nor do I have any of her books (I think!). I'll look out for anything by her the next time I'm in my fave Indie shop (August probably). Although knowing how the Universe "works" I'm fully expecting to see some 'appear' in my local charity shop... [grin] The good news is that I've "discovered" that I do indeed have a copy of 'Death in Venice' as part of a short novel collection I bought a hundred years ago. I'll see what I can do about scheduling it this year.

    1. I'm surprised, Kitten. I thought you had read books by every author on earth. ;)
But no, we cannot have read them all. But I'm sure you'll like her.
My first one was We Were the Mulvaneys and that still belongs to my favourite books of her, but next are: The Falls and The Gravedigger's Daughter as well as Mudwoman.
Some of her books are Young Adult or Youth and they are shorter but still very worth reading.

  2. Which book do you plan to read by JCO next, Marianne? Do you have a favorite book you've read by JCO to date?

I haven't read many books by JCO yet... But I definitely plan to read more of her novels. So, I can't say as I have a favorite book by her.

I do plan to read Cardiff, by the Sea: Four Novellas of Suspense by Joyce Carol Oates this year. Right now though, I have my next six books mapped out, so it will be a while before I read this book.

    1. Oh, interesting, Lisa. You have a plan? That's great! The only books I have on my plan are those for my book club, every thing else I decide on the spur of the moment.
I just said to Kitten ^^ that my first book, We Were the Mulvaneys, still belongs to my favourite books of her, but next are: The Falls and The Gravedigger's Daughter as well as Mudwoman.
Right now, I have no book on my TBR pile that I want to read by her but I always check when I'm in a bookshop with foreign literature whether they have one that I haven't read one. Or I'll have to order one with my next batch. I'm not a huge fan of short stories but if they offered Cardiff ..., I'm sure I'd get it.

    3. I usually decide on the spur of the moment what I'll read as well. However, my current read is a novel that is the 1st in a trilogy and since I have the follow-up books in the trilogy, I might as well read them next. Then I have two books that I keep meaning to read, but have been putting them off. So, I'll read them next. So that makes 5 books... I think I may put off the 6th book and substitute the JCO book I mentioned instead.

    4. I often change my next read, Lisa. It just depends on the mood I'm in. I have no idea what to pick next at the moment. Those that I'm reading don't seem to capture me that much which means I have even fewer ideas on the next one.
Which book is from your trilogy?

    5. I'm reading Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins. It's the first novel in a young adult trilogy from 2014. I've been meaning to read this novel for about 10 years now, but have kept finding other books to read. It falls into the fantasy, action, adventure genre. I'm roughly 66% into it and it's likable so far.

    6. Ah, I've never heard of the author or the book. But I'm not into fantasy or action or anything like that genre, so I'm not surprised. I'm glad you like it.

    7. I read widely in terms of genres!! Sure, I have my favorite genres like historical fiction, cozy mystery novels, classic literature, thrillers/mysteries, and nonfiction, but I become bored if I read too much of the same thing.

I finished reading Rebel Belle yesterday. It was likable enough. BUT if I didn't already own the two remaining novels in the trilogy, I'd take a hard pass on reading them. However, I feel compelled to read the two remaining books in the Rebel Belle trilogy now that I have them. I'm roughly 20% into book two now and will continue reading later on today.

    8. Oh, I totally understand that, Lisa. I bought a book the other day that is the second in a trilogy and hadn't noticed. Now I have to buy the first in order to even start. But I'm sure I'll like it, the subject is interesting and the author is good.

    9. LOL, I've done the same thing you have.... Meaning, I've purchased the second book in a series and didn't know the book was part of a series. Like you, I ended up having to buy the first book in the series as well.
