Top Ten Tuesday ~ Ten Books Set Outside The US

Top Ten Tuesday" is an original feature/weekly meme created on the blog "The Broke and the Bookish". This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists at "The Broke and the Bookish". Since I am just as fond of them as they are, I jump at the chance to share my lists with them! Have a look at their page, there are lots of other bloggers who share their lists here.

July 19: Ten Books Set Outside The US

This should be an easy topic for me since I read a lot of books from outside of the US. However, there are so many to choose from, so it's not that easy again. So, I tried to put some of my favourite books from all the continents on here. Let's see.

Europe
Austen, Jane "Persuasion" - 1817
Mann, Thomas "Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family" (German: Buddenbrooks) - 1901
Pamuk, Orhan "My Name is Red" (Turkish: Benim Adim Kirmizi) - 1998

Africa
Le Clézio, Jean-Marie Gustave "The African" (French: L'Africain) - 2004
Paton, Alan "Cry, The Beloved Country" - 1948

Asia
Ghosh, Amitav "The Glass Palace" - 2000
Seth, Vikram "A Suitable Boy" - 1993

North America
Lawson, Mary "Crow Lake" - 2002

South America
Allende, Isabel "The House of the Spirits" (Spanish: La Casa de los Espíritus) - 1982
García Márquez, Gabriel "One Hundred Years of Solitude" (Spanish: Cien años de soledad) - 1967

Australia
Grenville, Kate "The Secret River" - 2005

I have read many more novels about and from countries outside the US. If you are looking for a specific one, you can always click on one of the "Labels" on the right hand side of my blog.

Happy Reading.

  2. Great list. I love Isabel Allende! But I sort of feel like a fake saying that because I've only read her City of the Beasts series for kids.

    1. Thanks for your visit. I saw yours yesterday, I always try to visit two or three new blogs once a week. I loved your list, as well. Never read her series for kids but that doesn't mean she's not jsut as great in those books as she is in her others. I will have to read that one day.

      Have a good day,

    1. Thank you so much, Giovana. Somehow I like Spanish books, whether they are South American or European. They have a special something that speaks to me.

I tried to comment on your post but always have problems with posting, they keep telling me that I already have an account - which is possible - because I have commented on others before - but then won't let me sign in with it.

Anyway, this is what I wanted to write:
What a lovely list. Some great new ideas for me. I will probably pick up a few of your ideas. Is "La Hija de la Noche" originally Spanish or French? Will try to get that in French, my Spanish is not good enoug. ;)

Thanks for visiting my TTT earlier.

      Happy Reading,

  7. This was an easy one for me too, so I limited myself to one per country. I almost used 100 Years of Solitude as well, but decided against it, since it's sort of a "fictional" country (though I believe it is sort of supposed to be Colombia. Anyway, nice choices. My list:http://100greatestnovelsofalltimequest.blogspot.com/2016/07/normal-0-false-false-false-en-us-x-none.html

    1. Thank you for visiting my blog.

Yes, 100 Years of Solitude is supposed to be Colombia but it doesn't matter. It's always harder to restrict yourself to 10 "only" if you have a hundred to choose from.

Thank you also for your link. Will head over there right now.

      Have a good week,
      Marianne
