Arnold, Gaynor "Girl in a Blue Dress" - 2008
A novel based on the life of Charles Dickens'
wife. Quite an eye opener about the author though we weren't too surprised
that women didn't count much. A very interesting read.
We discussed this in our international book club in April 2009.
Read my original review here.
I've always felt bad for Catherine Dickens and the way her husband treated her. Plus, didn't she have like 10 children? That's enough to earn anyone's sympathy!
ReplyDeleteI think that was the "normal" life for women at the time, Lark. They had no means of contraception, nothing to say, awful. We just suppose that someone like Charles Dickens who wrote about the inequalities in life would have behaved differently. I suppose he didn't.
DeleteWriters like Dickens were so astute about people and society. What heppened when it came to dealing with women?
ReplyDeleteYou are right, Harvee. I guess women were not supposed to be people? As it still is in many parts of this world. :(
DeleteI liked the book, but it was terrible how Dickens treated his wife. Especially, after all his books about how people are badly treated.
ReplyDeleteI know, Lisbeth. It's just not understandable from today's point of view, but I think they didn't even notice back then. Not even Dickens.
