Top Ten Tuesday ~ Books Outside My Comfort Zone

"Top Ten Tuesday" is an original feature/weekly meme created on the blog "The Broke and the Bookish". It was created because they are particularly fond of lists. It is now hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl.

Since I am just as fond of them as they are, I jump at the chance to share my lists with them! Have a look at their page, there are lots of other bloggers who share their lists here.

This week's topic is Books Outside My Comfort Zone

It is already outside my comfort zone to post about books I didn't care for that much. But since I have to list books that I wouldn't necessarily pick up - and these are mostly book club books - I don't like most of these titles. The books I care for least are chick lit, then fantasy and sci-fi.
Abe, Kōbō (安部 公房) "Inter Ice Age 4" (J: 第四間氷期/Dai yon kan pyouki) - 1959
Ballantyne, Tony "Dream London" - 2013

Ihimaera, Witi "The Whale Rider" - 1987
Kafka, Franz "The Metamorphosis" (GE: Die Verwandlung) - 1912
Kimmel, Haven "A Girl Named Zippy" - 2000
Martinson, Harry "Aniara" (SW: Aniara) - 1956
McKinley, Tamara "Lands Beyond the Sea" - 2007

  1. The Metamorphosis was an assigned reading when I was in high school, and it left me bewildered and awed and wanting to read more like that.

    1. I also had to read him in school, Deb. And not just this one. I didn't like Kafka then and still don't. But I'm glad there are people who liked him.

    1. You might even like it, Rosie. It was a little too light for me and I get easily bored then.

  3. I actually enjoyed The Metamorphosis - and Murakami's spin on it, with the reverse!

  6. LOL, several of the books on my list that I wouldn't normally read were also book club reads (3/10).

    1. That's the beauty of book clubs, Cindy. We find books that we would never have touched but we also find those that we wouldn't touch ever again. I don't understand people in a book club who only read what they think they will like. I read them all. Even if I moan about them later. LOL

  7. Several of these feel like they were written just for book clubs.

    1. You might be correct there, Pam, especially the chick lit ones. I try to avoid a lot of those when it says, book club read. But I don't avoid the ones that the book club decides on.

  8. Knit One, Kill Two sounds intriguing! I love cozy mysteries and am a knitter, so this novel may be just the read for me.
