Happy January to all my friends and readers

New Calendar picture with this
beautiful watercolour painting by Frank Koebsch

"Winteridylle in Norwegen"
"
Winter Idyll in Norway"

Hanka and Frank say to this picture:
We like to travel north and enjoy the Norwegian winter. It's just wonderful to be there in nature in winter, whether you're by the fjords, with the fishermen, the Samis and their reindeer or when you're out and about on a dog sled.

This January, Frank brightens our month with this beautiful painting from Norway. I have been to all Scandinavian countries, except for this one. I guess we will have to change that at some point. It is just too beautiful to miss.

As every year, kids go around to neighbour's houses in the area to wish everyone a happy new year and get some sweets in return. We don't have as many kids coming as my parents had but there are always quite a few and it is lovely.

We ended the year with a theatre visit on the day before New Year's Eve. Before that, we had our sons over for Christmas and almost my whole family (20 people) for our yearly Secret Santa (Wichteln) the day after. We draw names and letters beforehand. Everyone buys one present for the person they get that starts with the letter they are assigned. It was a lot of fun but I notice that we are getting older. Here you can see where our "Wichtel" entered the house.

  2. What a fun Christmas tradition! We draw names of the adults, and then everyone buys gifts for the kids. Then we play some kind of game where gifts get swapped, and depending on what the story says, you have to pass your gift to the left or right. It's so much fun.

    1. Yes, Sarah, we always have a lot of fun unpacking. My family did the swapping similarly but then you have to buy gifts that everyone might enjoy. This way, the presents are really meant for just the one person who receives it and we are all very happy with the outcome. Since we all only buy one gift for one person, we put a lot more thought into it.

  3. Norway is the best Scandinavian country I think. It is so beautiful, people are very nice and, at least in the north of the country, you can imagine the asa gods having a hand over the landscapre.
Our son has got a job in Oslo and we are very happy about that. Means more trips to Norway.

    1. Oh, nice. Congratulations to your son, Lisbeth. I have been to Denmark, Sweden and Finland (if you include that) but not to Norway though we have very good friends there. We will have to go one day.
