I've been doing Throwback Thursdays for a while but I noticed that I wrote a lot of reviews in a short time when I first started. One of my blogger friends always posts the reviews of one month but that would be too much. So, these are my reviews from the fourth part of November 2011.
I liked the move better than the book but it was so great that I have to mention this here..
There is a French village and a woman who returns there after having lived in Paris for ten years and is confronted with her past.
Hemingway, Ernest "The Old Man and the Sea" - 1952
An ageing fisherman who hits a stroke of bad luck, doesn't catch anything for ages, goes out to sea and catches the probably largest fish he has ever set eyes on. What follows is his struggle to bring the fish home. Alone.
O'Dell, Scott "Island of the Blue Dolphins" - 1969
The Native American girl Karana ends up on a deserted island where she spends eighteen years alone. The story tells about her life, her struggles to survive.
There is also a follow-up: "Zia"
I *think* I enjoyed 'Chocolat' slightly better in book form but I remember enjoying both a great deal... Its the only one of hers I've read (so far), but I have picked up a few more recently...
ReplyDeleteAnd I am sure you will enjoy them, Kitten. Her books are all very good. And not all the same subject, either.
DeleteI remember liking both the book and the movie about the same. I feeel like I've read Island of the Blue Dolphins (reading your description sparked something). Adding Coatliners to my TBR.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you read the Blue Dolphins as a child or youngster. I know I did.
DeleteAnd Coastliners is a great book, enjoy.
I love Coastliners. And I agree, Chocolat the movie is better than the book, though I did like the book, too. :D
ReplyDeleteWe often think alike, Lark, so I'm not surprised here.
DeleteSo strange when the movie ends up being better!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't happen very often, Sarah, but from time to time you find a movie that is as great as the book or even better. The last time I saw a wonderful film after I read the wonderful book was "Where the Crawdads Sing".

a side of Brecht I have no idea about!
ReplyDeleteHe was very diverse, Emma. And fantastic, of course.
DeleteJoanne Harris is always good, I find. The Old Man and the Sea is a master piece.
ReplyDeleteShe definitely is, Lisbeth. I still have a book or two on my TBR pile, I'm looking forward to them. The Old Man and the Sea was my first Hemingway and I've loved his writings ever since.
