Six Degrees of Separation ~ Sandwich

Catherine Newman
Newman, Catherine "Sandwich" - 2024

#6Degrees of Separation:
from Sandwich (Goodreads) to The Big Green Tent

#6Degrees is a monthly link-up hosted by Kate at Books Are My Favourite and Best. I love the idea. Thank you, Kate. See more about this challenge, its history, further books and how I found this here.

The starter book this month is Sandwich by Catherine Newman

Here is the description:

"For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds: emotional, marital, and—thanks to the cottage’s ancient plumbing—septic too.

This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. (Hello, menopause!) Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

It's one precious week: everything is in balance; everything is in flux. And when Rocky comes face to face with her family’s history and future, she is forced to accept that she can no longer hide her secrets from the people she loves."

This is not really my kind of literature, so I couldn't find much to link to this book. And there were no words in the title that I could use, so I went to another author with the first name Catherine.

Martin, Catherine "The Incredible Journey" - 1923

Mistry, Rohinton "Such a Long Journey" - 1991

Tsumura, Kikuko "There's No Such Thing as an Easy Job" (Konoyoni tayasui shigoto wa na/この世にたやすい仕事はない) - 2015

McCall Smith, Alexander "The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party" (The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency #12) - 2011

Ulitzkaya, Lyudmila "Imago" or "The Big Green Tent" (RUS: Зеленый шатер Zelenyi shater) - 2010

I could have even swapped the two last books since the both have Big and Tent in their titles.

What do the first and the last book have in common? Well, they both take place in extremely difficult times for the protagonists.

  1. What a fun meme. I tried it once but haven't had the time since then. It's nice to try.

    1. It's one of the challenges I really enjoy although it does get more difficult over time, if you don't want to repeat yourself all the time. But it's definitely worth doing, Harvee. I hope you will have the time in future.

  2. Matty </3

Eleanor and I are halfway through season 10 again. Fully prepared to start the whole series over again and sob my way through it.

    1. I haven't seen it since he passed away, Sarah. Though I get snippets on Insta all the time. Must start rewatching it.

    2. I restarted it the week he passed, and cried for most of it. Eleanor asked to watch with me when she saw I wa shalfway through season 2, and now I don't know how many times we've watched it. We watched 1 or 2 episodes a night before reading/bedtime. It hasn't really made me feel any better, because I miss him, and how do you miss someone you never knew? But for 30 years, I felt like I did know him. He always made me laugh when I wanted to cry, and he was my comfort person.

    3. That is the beauty of that show. We could all imagine being part of them, they became good friends. I think most fans feel like you, we all were incredibly sad.
Our family has watched Friends since it started, all the time. We have all the DVDs plus a few with "the best", though I think they are all great. We can hold conversations totally with quotes. And we have every Lego or other knick-knack that is available about them.

    5. It does. But The One Where Heckles Dies is always the hardest. Chandler was so terrified. And Matty ended up with the life Chandler was afraid of, and Chandler ended up with the life that Matty also deserved.

    6. So true, Sarah. There are a few sad ones but this one espcially. And it shows that even those people who make our life difficult can leave a huge impact on us.

    1. Thanks, Davida, that is part of the pleasure, I always think, some new books to explore. Although it is also funny when we find the same book for our chains.

    1. I found it really hard this time, Emma. I love using the words in the title but I never read a book with the word "sandwich" in it.

  5. It's funny - there's another book called The Incredible Journey, quite well known when I was a child, about two dogs and a cat that travel across Canada to get back home. I think there was also a Disney movie!

    1. Interesting, Constance. I just googled it. It's by Sheila Burnford, written in 1961. I guess the only way she could get away with it, was because she was British and the other one American.
