Aitmatov, Chinghiz "Jamila" (Russian: Джамиля - Jamilia) - 1958
This is a very interesting story by a writer from a country we don't know that well, Kyrgyzstan.
The novel describes village life in Central Asia and the disappearance of Central Asian cultural traditions in the USSR. It is one of the best love stories I ever read.
Read my original review here.
I've never read a book set in Kyrgyzstan. I like the sound of this one.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't either, Lark. And it was beautiful. I am sure you will like it, as well.
DeleteThat will be my read for Kyrgyzstan, it sounds wonderful.
ReplyDeleteIt does, Lisbeth. So far, it has been my only read about Kyrgyzstan except for Erika Fatland travelling there in Sovietistan which is, of course, viewed from the outside. I hope you will get to this and enjoy it.
DeleteFlora has a friend from Kasachstan, but not Kyrgyzstan. There are so many countries in the world we do not know much about.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, Eva. That's why I love to read about countries from all over the world, I know I won't get to many of them.
DeleteLife is too short :).
DeleteYup. But as readers, we can experience so much more.
DeleteTrue.
