Book Quotes of the Week

"To feel most beautifully alive means to be reading something beautiful, ready always to apprehend in the flow of language the sudden flash of poetry." Gaston Bachelard

"I cannot sleep unless I am surrounded by books." Jorge Luis Borges

"I know every book of mine by its smell, and I have but to put my nose between the pages to be reminded of all sorts of things." George Robert Gissing

"It is pleasanter to eat one’s own peas out of one’s own garden, than to buy them by the peck at Covent Garden; and a book reads the better, which is our own, and has been so long known to us, that we know the topography of its blots and dog’s-ears, and can trace the dirt in it to having read it at tea with buttered muffins, or over a pipe...." Charles Lamb, letter to S.T. Coleridge, 11 October 1802

"The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them." Mark Twain, attributed

  1. I have to read every day! When I was a child and had no books to read I read the dictionary, the encyclopedia or cereal boxes. Our daughter is the same way. Once when we were living in Germany we took her to the post library and the children's section was closed, she cried. The librarian took pity on her and let her go in it.
Hope you have a good weekend.

    1. Oh, same here, Janet. My favourite read besides books would be the encyclopedia but in the absence of anything like that, I read anything. Yes, cereal boxes, shop names etc., anything I come across.

We passed on our love of books to our kids, too, luckily, we never were in your situation but I am sure it would have resulted in tears, as well. How wonderful of the librarian to understand.

My weekend, I had a huge migraine on Saturday, could hardly breathe, yesterday was a little better. Thanks for asking. Hope yours was better than mine.

      Cheers,
      Marianne

  2. Migraines are so awful, they totally wipe our daughter out when she has one. And the worst is that she still has to go to work.
Our weekend was good, our weather has been beautiful with highs in the 70's already.
    Hope you're feeling better soon.
I'm reading the French book you reviewed My Wish List and enjoying it so much. We don't buy many lottery tickets--though we did last month when the prize reached 900 million dollars and we talked about what we'd do with the money. I think the author has it right, it would be very scary to win that much money. How would it change our life and would we want our lives to change.

    1. Thank you, yes, the migraines totally destroy my life, I can't go to work, I would just not be able to do it all the time. I used to get them about once a week and then I still worked but now ... well, I am glad I don't have to work in order to live, don't know what I'd do.

The lottery question is actually a good one. I don't think the protagonist in our book has solved it very well but I don't think it's a good idea to change your life completely. It would be nice to choose where you want to live, though.

I'm glad you enjoy the book, it's always nice to know.

      Happy reading,
      Marianne
