Book Quotes of the Week

"The classics are the books that come down to us bearing the traces of readings previous to ours, and bringing in their wake the traces they themselves have left on the culture or cultures they have passed through (or, more simply, on language and customs)." Italo Calvino

I always say, many people before us have read and liked the classics and there is a reason they are still around!

"Every book is a children’s book if the kid can read!" Mitch Hedberg

Definitely. My son read "Lord of the Rings" when he was eleven and many people were surprised he even started such a long book. He loved it.

"Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another 'What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .'" C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

It almost seems like a miracle every time that happens.

  1. I love that Mitch Hedberg quote! It reminds me of when I was in elementary school and the librarian kept questioning the books I wanted to check out because she thought I was too young for them. But I was stubborn...and I checked them out anyway. ;D

    1. Well done, Lark. We always need to persist more but as children, we don't often dare when an adult tells us we are wrong. I remember having a talk with one of my sons and his friend once about a decision made by a teacher that they didn't agree with. I told them what they should do and my son's friend said, wow, I wish my parents were like that, they are of the opinion that the teacher is always right. Nope, not always, we need to question what other people are doing and saying. Doesn't mean we should disobey them but with a good reason, we can always oppose.

  2. I wholeheartedly agree with the quote "Every book is a children’s book if the kid can read!" Children shouldn't be restricted to only picture books. If they are motivated and ready, they should have the opportunity to read longer books that are more challenging as well.

    1. So true, Lectrice. When my children were in school, I helped out a lot. I saw kids the same age, some would struggle with the easiest books while others already read whole novels. It doesn't help any of them if you challenge one too much and hold the other one back.

    1. Thanks, Sarah. I never heard of him but just learned that I did know him from That 70s Show as Frank, Chef at the Hub. He was hilarious there even though he only had a few lines. You are right, what a loss.
