"Top Ten Tuesday" is an original feature/weekly meme created on the blog "The Broke and the Bookish". This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists at "The Broke and the Bookish".
It is now hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl.
Since I am just as fond of them as they are, I jump at the chance to
share my lists with them! Have a look at their page, there are lots of
other bloggers who share their lists here.
This week, our topic is Books with Character Names In the Titles. I thought that sounded like an interesting topic and wondered whether I could find ten titles with only the first name. I succeeded. Not only that, I had to delete a few from the list. (However, after I threw out Hamlet, poor Daniel is the only guy among nine girls, LOL.) Now, there are only books on there that I really liked. Maybe some of you will also find a good one among them.
In any case, I'm looking forward to all the other lists and especially, whether some of them twisted the topic, as we all often do.
Aitmatov, Chinghiz "Jamilya" (RUS: Джамиля) - 1958
Austen, Jane "Emma" - 1816
Buck, Pearl S. "Peony" - 1948
Coelho, Paulo "Brida" (PO: Brida) - 1990
Frazier, Charles "Varina" - 2018
George, Margaret "Elizabeth I" - 2011
Mankell, Henning "Daniel" (SW: Vindens son) - 2000
Mercier, Pascal "Lea" (GE: Lea) - 2007
Ruiz Zafón, Carlos "Marina" (E: Marina) - 1999
Soueif, Ahdaf "Aisha" - 1983
Ah, you further limited yourself, and you still found ten!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Deb. Yes, I really was surprised about that. I'm looking forward to seeing all the other names that people found. Have seen some interesting ones already. Will have to wait until tomorrow, there is so much to do today. LOL
DeleteBut thanks for your quick visit, always a pleasure to see your name come up.
I love your list. I actually added some to my list to read. Thank you.
ReplyDeletewww.rsrue.blogspot.com
I'm so sorry, Rue. This ended up in my spam folder which I only found today. Thank you for your comment, I didn't want to ignore you.
DeleteI'm afraid I only know Emma! How fascinating that these lists are so different!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it just? I was surprised when I saw the first list by someone else but there are sooo many names. Anyway, I'm not surprised, you only know Emma, Davida. It's probably the most famous one.
DeleteGreat list! I had two titles on my post today with a first name only but I would've struggled hard to come up with any more 😂 I just read your review for Marina and wow, I'm definitely adding it to my TBR. It sounds so good!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised I found so many first name titles only, Dini. I absolutely love everything by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, I think you read "The Shadow of the Wind"? If you liked that one, you will also become a huge fan of his writings. Unfortunately, he left us a while ago and there will be no more of his stories, all the better for you to be able to get to know them all. Enjoy.
DeleteGreat list! The only one I'm familiar with is Emma. Happy TTT!
ReplyDeleteMy post: https://wp.me/pBO87-3es
Thanks, Kristine, you are not the only one. Jane Austen is probably the most famous of those writers, as well. I hope you can find some other books on the list that you like. Enjoy.
DeleteThe only one I've read on here is EMMA. I loved it when I read it, but it's been a long time so I think a re-read is in order!
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
Thanks, Susan, you are the third person who mentions this. Yes, re-reading is always great. I also love all the Jane Austen adaptations, there is always something to moan about but I love that we still love her stories 200 years later, so much that we turn them into films and watch them again and again.
DeleteI really enjoyed Emma, but it has been a while since I read it!
ReplyDeleteHere is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Thanks, Poinsettia. Welcome to the club, everyone seems to have read about her a while ago. And thanks for your link. Will visit it soon.
DeleteWe didn't overlap on any of these this week, did we? Congrats on finding all one name titles! I thought about putting Emma on my list, but then went with Alice in Zombieland instead. :)
ReplyDeleteNope, we didn't, Lark. Must be one of the few times where that happens. But I haven't found anyone else, yet, with the same name as one of mine on their list. We'll see whether I did by the end of the week. Happy Reading.
DeleteSo neat that you even pick those with just one name!
ReplyDeleteI would have chosen Rebecca for sure
Thanks, Emma. Would you believe that I never read "Rebecca". I watched the movie with Laurence Olivier decades ago and always wanted to read it but somehow I never got to it. I've seen "Rebecca" on a few lists but not "Emma" which I would have expected.
DeleteGreat list. I have read Emma and Brida. Love everything by Coelho. I also love everything by Ruiz Zafón and did not know about Marina. A must read indeed.
ReplyDeleteThere are a few authors here that I really like, Lisbeth. Pascal Mercier and Ahdaf Soueif, for example. And Pearl S. Buck, I*ve read a lot of her books. Anyway, all of Carlos Ruiz Zafón's books are great, even though this is a YA book.
DeleteI have read one of his YA books, The Midnight Palace and I loved it too. It has a wonderful opening line: "I'll never forget the night it snowed over Calcutta."
DeleteOh yes, Lisbeth. That was different from many others because it took place in India but it was just as beautiful as all his books.
DeleteI forgot about the Jane Austin books when I made my list.
ReplyDeleteI think we all forgot about a famous or favourite book, Cindy. In my case it was Heidi, my first book ever.
DeleteSome of these names are quite unique. I had never heard them before. Great list! Thanks for visiting my TTT list this week.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lectrice. You are right, some of the names are unusual, though they could be more popular in their countries, Jamilya for example. However, Varina was a real person and I know quite a few Americans but had never even heard that name before.
