Happy July!

Happy July to all my friends and readers

New Calendar picture with this
beautiful watercolour painting by Hanka Koebsch

"Ihre Majestät ruft"
"Her Majesty Calls"

Every time I see the picture of a lion, I first have to think about the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and then of one of my favourite TV shows, "F.R.I.E.N.D.S". Those who have watched it, will understand.

In English, the lion is called the "King of the Jungle" while in German we call him the "King of the Animals". I guess both sayings have a smidgen of truth in them.

I have described certain German words to you the last couple of months. Here's another one for you:

Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher

If you have learned a little German, you will know that we just put one word behind another one in order to create a new one. You might even know that "Eier" is the German word for "eggs". But what on earth ist the Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher?

Let's take the word apart "Eier-Schalen-Soll-Bruch-Stellen-Verursacher" is "Eggs-Shells-Should-Breaking-Point-Someone/Something who/that causes something" which means it's a gadget for cracking (boiled) eggs. We also call them "Eierköpfer" which means "Egg Beheader". It really is more a fun gadget than one you really use. We got one years ago by friends who bought it for "someone who has everything and doesn't need anything".

Another example how funny the German language can be.

June was a nice month, some rain, though not enough, some very hot days but the rest of the month was quite lovely.

* * *

And the war in the Ukraine lasts two months already. I doubt that Mr. Putin would have started attacking his neighbour country if he'd known they were such a hard nut to crack. Let's hope he will soon see that he cannot this and finish this nightmare.

And more bad news from all over the world, be they political or natural catastrophes. I have heard this quite often lately: "Please, Lord, let it rain brains or stones. But strike."

Have a happy July with this beautiful watercolour painting by Hanka Koebsch.

    1. They are indeed, Lisbeth. We don't use it very often, though. Well, we don't eat boiled eggs all that often, either. But it's always a nice gadget for when you have visitors.

  4. I didn't know you were German! I'm Afrikaans and that is a language that is actually quite close to German. Egg is also eier in Afrikaans.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight is a very popular and original South African song actually.

    Happy July Marianne!

    1. Oh, I didn't know that, Elza but now that you mention it, it surely must be an African song.

I have lived in the Netherlands for twenty years and speak the language, I can pick up a lot when listening to or reading Afrikaans. I always found it funny when Afrikaans was somewhere on Dutch TV and they subtitled it. LOL

      Dankie.
