Cather, Willa "My Ántonia" - 1918
This was a great book, the description of the characters and the landscape are so wonderful, it shows great writing.
New settlers in America, about a hard life a hundred years ago but I think it still has a lot to teach us.
We discussed this in our international book club in October 2008.

I loved it too!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Emma. It is a very good book, so I'm not surprised.
DeleteI really enjoyed reading this one, but then I am a fan of Willa Cather's writing. :)
ReplyDeleteI really liked this, Lark. So, I set out to read more by her but wasn't too impressed with the next book I found: Shadows on the Rock. Did you read that one? Can you recommend any other books?
DeleteI adored Shadows on the Rock but I can see why not everyone does. I recommend the other "prairie novels," O Pioneers! and The Song of the Lark. Her last novel, Sapphira and the Slave Girl, was an interesting departure, and A Lost Lady is one of her melancholy masterpieces. I was not that taken by One of Ours, the WWI novel, but otherwise I've loved everything by her. I'm going to work myself through the rest eventually.
DeleteI might pick her up again one day and am therefore grateful for your recommendateions, Lory. Right now, there are too many books on my TBR pile by writers where I absolutely love everything.
