This week, our topic is Books with Geographical Terms in the Title (for example: mountain, island, latitude/longitude, ash, bay, beach, border, canyon, capes, city, cliff, coast, country, desert, epicenter, hamlet, highway, jungle, ocean, park, sea, shore, tide, valley, etc.)
I love geography, so I started looking for titles with something geographical in them and I found lots of books about mountains and hills. So, mountains and hills it is.

DeleteGreat list! The terms most popular for me were 'sea' and 'city' but I had a few mountains. I enjoyed And the Mountains Echoed but I always tend to enjoy Hosseini's books :)

DeleteYou are probably one of the few of my blogger friends who read Mann, I know we both love his books.
And Soul Mountain is truly fantastic, such a well deserved Nobel Prize award.
I've not heard any of these books but the covers looks good. I did read one book called The Mountain by Paul Yoon, though it's short stories, not a novel, sort of historical fiction, literary fiction, but it would fit in with your list.

There are probably four of the books that are better known (Cold Mountain, East of the Mountains, And the Mountains Echoed and The Magic Mountain), I doubt many have heard of the others, and we can't know every book there is, so no problem. But I'm sure there are a few among them that you might like.
DeleteI have not heard of Paul Yoon, but I don't read many short stories - I prefer books that start at 500 pages ..., but the title would definitely have been good for my list. Thanks.

DeleteI noticed a lot of titles on my Goodreads TBR lists with "hill" and "mountain" in them. These kinds of titles appeal to me because they're so evocative. Plus, I just love looking at grand, beautiful mountains in all their glory!

Same here, Susan. I love the ocean and live a lot closer to it than to the next higher elevation but mountains are just as fascinating.

It legitimately made me smile seeing Vinegar Hill as your first selection this week. I picked a copy of it up on a whim at a bookstore years ago and immediately fell in love with it. Gorgeous writing.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, Christopher, the reason it's first is purely technical, the author's name comes first in the alphabet. I totally agree with you, though. I have not read any other books by the author but would love to. Have you? Would you recommend a certain one? They all sound good.
DeleteI haven't read any of her other work, but I have a couple of them waiting patiently on my shelves. I think I'm most interested in Midnight Champagne, though. But really, if they're anything close to Vinegar Hill, I don't think we can go wrong.
