Top Ten Tuesday ~ Mountains and Hills all over the World

"Top Ten Tuesday" is an original feature/weekly meme created on the blog "The Broke and the Bookish". This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists at "The Broke and the Bookish". It is now hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl.

Since I am just as fond of them as they are, I jump at the chance to share my lists with them! Have a look at their page, there are lots of other bloggers who share their lists here.

This week, our topic is Books with Geographical Terms in the Title (for example: mountain, island, latitude/longitude, ash, bay, beach, border, canyon, capes, city, cliff, coast, country, desert, epicenter, hamlet, highway, jungle, ocean, park, sea, shore, tide, valley, etc.)

I love geography, so I started looking for titles with something geographical in them and I found lots of books about mountains and hills. So, mountains and hills it is.

Ansay, A. Manette "Vinegar Hill" - 1995
Cognetti, Paolo "The Eight Mountains" (I: Le otto montagne) - 2016
Elderkin, Susan "Sunset Over Chocolate Mountains" - 2000
Frazier, Charles "Cold Mountain" - 1997
Guterson, David "East of the Mountains" - 1999
Hosseini, Khaled "And the Mountains Echoed" - 2013
Mann, Thomas "The Magic Mountain" (GE: Der Zauberberg) - 1924
Spufford, Francis "Golden Hill: A Novel of Old New York" - 2016
Tucholsky, Kurt "Rheinsberg - a Storybook for Lovers" (GE: Rheinsberg - ein Bilderbuch für Verliebte) - 1912
Gao, Xingjian "Soul Mountain" (CHN: 灵山, língshān) - 1989

I wonder how many books about mountains other readers found.

📚 Happy Reading! 📚

    1. It's a brilliant book, Lydia. And also a good film which rarely is the case.

  2. Great list! The terms most popular for me were 'sea' and 'city' but I had a few mountains. I enjoyed And the Mountains Echoed but I always tend to enjoy Hosseini's books :)

  3. I love hills and mountains, so nice spin on this week's prompt. So many good sounding books on your list this week.

  4. Interesting picks. Judging from the cover, Sunset of Chocolate Mountain seems like a strange little story...

    1. It is, Lectrice, I probably would file it under "chick lit" or "summer read" which isn't really my genre but it was alright. Not my favourite but alright.

  5. Great list!
I have only read Mann's - which I should revisit.
Just went to see your review of Soul Mountain.
I do have a mountain on my list!: https://wordsandpeace.com/2022/09/13/top-ten-books-with-geographical-terms-in-the-title/

I'm also thinking of Merton's famous autobio: The Seven Storey Mountain.
And Gentian Hill by Elizabeth Goudge.

If you want to try something different, you might have a look at this one: https://wordsandpeace.com/2015/03/22/iffp-2015-review-by-night-the-mountain-burns/

    1. You always try interesting different things, Emma, so I am looking forward to your list.
You are probably one of the few of my blogger friends who read Mann, I know we both love his books.
And Soul Mountain is truly fantastic, such a well deserved Nobel Prize award.

  6. I've not heard any of these books but the covers looks good. I did read one book called The Mountain by Paul Yoon, though it's short stories, not a novel, sort of historical fiction, literary fiction, but it would fit in with your list.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. There are probably four of the books that are better known (Cold Mountain, East of the Mountains, And the Mountains Echoed and The Magic Mountain), I doubt many have heard of the others, and we can't know every book there is, so no problem. But I'm sure there are a few among them that you might like.
I have not heard of Paul Yoon, but I don't read many short stories - I prefer books that start at 500 pages ..., but the title would definitely have been good for my list. Thanks.

    1. We all have those weeks, Lindsey, where we don't find any books that fit the topic but that's alright, we can't read everything. Unfortunately.

  8. I so almost went with mountains as well, but ended up at the beach instead. I love your list and a number of them would have made my list as well. Including The Mountain between us.

    Happy TTT!

    1. Well, Mareli, I almost ended up with ocean, beach, sea ... I guess if you love one, you must also love the others. I hadn't heard of The Mountain Between Us but it does sound quite interesting. Thanks.

  9. Someone else did mountains and hills today too! I thought about mountains but decided to go a different direction: https://cindysbookcorner.blogspot.com/2022/09/top-ten-tuesday-authors-that-gravitate.html

  10. Mountains and hills...fun! I don't think I have one mountain or hill in any of my TTT titles this week.

    1. But I'm sure you have read a book that has a mountain or a hill on the title. If not, well, there are ten here that might be something. LOL. Thanks, Lark.

  12. Oh, you've reminded me that I used to have Vinegar Hill on one of my TBR shelves that didn't make it through the retirement move. Great list this week, Marianne. Mine is here: https://www.notesinthemargin.org/2022/09/13/toptentuesdaybooks-with-geographical-terms-in-the-title/

    1. Oh, what a shame, Mary. But I know the trouble, having had such a move myself a couple of years ago. Maybe you'll come across a copy in the library one day. In the meantime, have a look at my review.

  13. I love that not only did you find ten books with mountain or hill, but you also used had a book with "berg" on it. A lot of people probably don't know is the German term for mountain. Good job! :D

  15. I noticed a lot of titles on my Goodreads TBR lists with "hill" and "mountain" in them. These kinds of titles appeal to me because they're so evocative. Plus, I just love looking at grand, beautiful mountains in all their glory!

    Happy TTT!

    1. Same here, Susan. I love the ocean and live a lot closer to it than to the next higher elevation but mountains are just as fascinating.

  16. Great way to have narrowed in on a specific geographical feature instead of a mix like most of us! Wish I'd thought of it - I enjoyed Cold Mountain and Mountains Echoed. I have a couple different mountain ones on my list.

And if you liked Cold Mountains and And the Mountains Echoed, I'm sure you would also like a few of the other ones.

  17. It legitimately made me smile seeing Vinegar Hill as your first selection this week. I picked a copy of it up on a whim at a bookstore years ago and immediately fell in love with it. Gorgeous writing.

    1. To be honest, Christopher, the reason it's first is purely technical, the author's name comes first in the alphabet. I totally agree with you, though. I have not read any other books by the author but would love to. Have you? Would you recommend a certain one? They all sound good.

    2. I haven't read any of her other work, but I have a couple of them waiting patiently on my shelves. I think I'm most interested in Midnight Champagne, though. But really, if they're anything close to Vinegar Hill, I don't think we can go wrong.

    3. I totally agree. From the descriptions, I think I would be really interested in Blue Water but, as you said, I think we can't go wrong. I'm looking forward to your review once you get to Midnight Champagne which I also put on my wishlist.
