Eric Carle †

Rest in Peace, Eric Carle.

Eric Carle was one of my sons's favourite authors when he was in 1st grade. They used to do a lot of pictures in the way he had created his books. It was a great exercise for a little boy who didn't like to draw.

He passed away May 23rd at the age of 91.

Eric Carle has written and illustrated more than seventy books, his most famous of all "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" which, I think, every child born after 1969 must have read. Here is a very tiny, small selection.

Eric Carle, you have given so many kids (and their parents) so much joy. Sorry that it's time to say goodbye.

  1. I have not told Eleanor yet. She will be devastated. The Very Hungry Caterpillar was her first favorite; she always called him Pow. We also love The Very Busy Spider a whole lot. I have the cutest video of her sitting in her library nook and reading it when she was about two.

Our library does a really great event every year called Storybook Land and have eight book characters for children to visit, as well as readings by those characters, and so much more. The first year they put it on, Caterpillar was one of the characters and she LOVED it. All the others, she was scared of (she was not quite two) but once she saw her beloved Pow, she ran right up and hugged Caterpillar many times. One of my favorite memories.

    1. Oh, I can imagine. Must be terrible at her age. My son said "Wow! 91!" But then he is a grown-up and knows what an achievement that is. Still, we can mourn anyone, no matter how long they lived.

Eric Carle has given so many children (and their parents) a way to use their creativity which they might never have found without him. I for one will be forever grateful to him.
