Happy March!

Happy March to all my friends and readers

New Calendar picture with this
beautiful watercolour painting by Frank Koebsch

"Magnolienblüten als Frühlingsboten"
"Magnolia Blossoms as Heralds of Spring"

I love Magnolias, don't you? We don't have any in the garden, maybe in future, we are still creating it more and more every year. Although, with such beautiful pictures as those from Hanka and Frank Koebsch, one hardly misses them.

I talked about German expressions and "non-words of the year" in Germany last month. Today, I want to present you another award, the "most beautiful German word", chosen in 2004.

Number one is "Habseligkeiten". There are controversies as where the word comes from, the first one being "hab" from "to have", the second from "Seligkeit" meaning "happiness". But etymologically, it comes from "habsal" which is a word for minor possessions, something of little value and "-keit" being the suffix to express a noun. No matter what it meant originally, it is a beautiful word with a lovely meaning.

But my favourite one would be the number two on the list, "Geborgenheit". It represents the feeling of security, the warmth of a home or a person you are close to, and it is one of the words that cannot be expressed in one word in another language.

We have had a quiet February, and weatherwise it wasn't too bad. There were storms over Germany, the worst parts were in the North, granted, but our area was spared. Nothing to complain about.

The highlight of the month was a game evening with eight people, family and friends who like to play. We love board games, played many of them with our kids when they were little, have always had a couple of friends to play with and now play often with one of my brothers and his wife.

This is one of our favourites: Mitternachtsparty (Midnight Party).

And we were alerted that there are still a lot of snowflowers in my parents' old garden and would we like any from them. Yes indeed. We all got some for our gardens and my brother planted some on the grave. Very special

I hope you will all have a happy March and that it will be the start of a nice spring or autumn for most of you.

  1. That Midnight Party game looks like a lot of fun! My extended family has a monthly game night, so we're always looking for new games to play. :D

    1. We've had this game for ages, it's from 1989. Apparently, they've changed to title to "Hugo das Schlossgespenst" and is availabe in the States as "Escape from the Hidden Castle". So, hopefully, you can find it. It is a lot of fun.

    1. You're welcome, Lisbeth. I once wrote something about a German festival or holiday or whatever and noticed that people really liked it. Ever since I have written something about Germany at the beginning of each month. Glad you also like it.
