Happy June!

Happy June to all my friends and readers

New Calendar picture with this
beautiful watercolour painting by Hanka Koebsch

"Noch ein wenig Deko, Schatz?"
"A Little More Decoration, Dear?"

When I was little, my parents lived in an old Low-German hallhouse and we always had swallows under the eaves. Swallows were the harbingers of summer. According to an old saying, both in English and German, "One swallow does not a summer make, nor one fine day; similarly one day or brief time of happiness does not make a person entirely happy" (NN). Still, the first swallows were usually a good sign that the days were getting longer and warmer soon.

Last month, I talked about words for different relatives in various languages and we had a good conversation about that. But who knows the meaning of the word "Lebensabschnittsgefährte"? As most people know, we love to combine words to build new ones in German. This word has been made from three different ones. Leben means life, Abschnitt is a part, a section or a portion, and Gefährte is a companion, hence we talk about a companion in a part of our life and we give this name to someone who is like a married partner to us but we are not married.

Don’t you just love that in the German language? I know I do.

We had a lovely spring month this May, some long needed rain in between, some storms but nothing too bad in our area though other parts in our country and in the rest of Europe had severe damages.

Unfortunately, no good news from the Ukraine, so far. On the contrary. What else is that guy prepared to do? He should know by now that the whole world is against him and that he can only lose when he goes any further.
