Top Ten Tuesday ~ Top Ten Books from 2012

"Top Ten Tuesday" is an original feature/weekly meme created on the blog "The Broke and the Bookish". This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists at "The Broke and the Bookish". It is now hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl.

Since I am just as fond of them as they are, I jump at the chance to share my lists with them! Have a look at their page, there are lots of other bloggers who share their lists here.

This week, our topic is Books I Love That Were Written Over Ten Years Ago

I absolutely love classic books and have tons of lists about them (e.g. here).

Therefore, I thought, what about books that are just ten years old and I came up with a list of some great books. I can't believe they are already a decade old and I cannot recommend them enough, so here we go.

Erpenbeck, Jenny "The End of Days" (GE: Aller Tage Abend) - 2012

Follett, Ken "Winter of the World" (Century Trilogy #2) - 2012

Grjasnowa, Olga "All Russians Love Birch Trees" (GE: Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt) - 2012

Johnson, Adam "The Orphan Master's Son" - 2012

Kingsolver, Barbara "Flight Behaviour" - 2012

Mantel, Hilary "Bring up the Bodies" (The Wolf Hall Trilogy #2) - 2012

McLain, Paula "The Paris Wife" - 2012

Morrison, Toni "Home" - 2012

Palma, Félix J. "The Map of the Sky" (E: El mapa del cielo) - 2012

Yu, Hua (余華/Yú Huá) "China in Ten Words" (十個詞彙裡的中國/Shi ge cihui li de Zhongguo) - 2012

There are some great books here by some wonderful authors. If you haven't read any of them, I hope you will do so in future. And if you have read them, let me know how you liked them. Thanks.

📚 Happy Reading! 📚

  1. I can't believe The Paris Wife is 10 years old and I still haven't read it. And I also haven't read Winter of the World yet... Gosh, I need to start reading through my TBR!

Great selection Marianne, 2012 was a good year!

    1. I know, Mareli. It's unbelievable how time flies and how long ago one thinks that a book was written. I can definitely recommend those two books. Enjoy.

  2. I've read Paris Wife and Flight Behavior and I thought both of these were lovely books. China in Ten Words and All Russians Love Birch Trees both intrigue me.

    1. I can certainly recommend them, Deb. Both about different parts of the world that interest me with some good information.

  3. I really liked your idea of using 2012 as the cut-off year! I'd also somehow thought The Paris Wife was a more recent publication, because it got a lot of bloggr attention during Non-Fiction November in 2020-21. The cycles of our interest in books are also quite fascinating. ~Lex (lexlingua.co)

    1. Thanks, Lex, indeed, it always astonishes me to see how old books are. And finding the same books on other bloggers' lists is always a plus.

  4. I’ve read a lot of Follett’s stuff, but not sure about Winter of the World. His world building is amazing, though!

    1. It's the second book in his century trilogy, Lydia. Preceded by "Fall of Giants", followed by "Edge of Eternity", a totally great account of the 20th century, viewed from many parts of the world.

  5. Great list, Marianne! I had the first book of this Ken Follett series on my list today 😊 It's such a great series!

    1. Definitely a wonderful series, Dini, just as great as his Kingsbridge books.

  6. Ah, I debated doing 10 years old too!
I have read 4 of these. I was quite impressed by The End of Days, which reminds me, thanks, I need to read more by her

    1. Great minds, eh, Emma? I love that you had that idea, as well.
And yes, it also reminds me to read more by Jenny Erpenbeck.

  7. I like that you focused only on 2012 reads. Making this list this week, it surprised me how long ago so many books were already released when they feel like just last year :)

    1. I know, Lindsey, it's just amazing. I read some of them about ten years ago and still think they were written yesterday. Gosh, I'm getting old. LOL

    1. Thanks, Cindy. My list would have just gotten too long if I'd done a longer period. Far too long.

  9. What a great list, Marianne. I haven't read the series you mention by Ken Follett, but I loved his Kingsbridge series.

    1. Thanks, Mary. If you loved the Kingsbridge series, you will also like the century trilogy. Especially since we can even compare some of the stuff he writes about.

  10. Great list. I love your twist on this week's prompt, I almost did the same, but came up short. So I decided to pick books I read within the last 10 years. Here is my TTT: https://herseriallife.com/top-10-books-written-over-ten-years-ago/

  11. I like your spin on this week's topic It's nice to remember the books we liked years ago. The only book I've read from your list is "The Paris Wife" but "All Russians Love Birch Trees" is an intriguing title.

Thanks for visiting My Top Ten Tuesday list earlier!

    1. You're welcome, Lectrice. And thanks for coming back.
I also loved your list. I have been reading quite a few books about Japan myself (eleven that I've reviewed here, not enough!) and I often list certain countries or areas, so I really enjoyed it. The books I lsted are all great, so I hope you will get to read some of them some time. Enjoy.

  12. I haven't read any of these. Most looked like historical fiction which I don't read but The map of the sky looks like a title that I might it.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. Thanks, Lissa. Actually, only "Winter of the World" and "Bring up the Bodies" are historical fiction, all the others are quite different. "The Map of the Sky" is a spin-off of an H.G. Wells novel (same as "The Map of Time" and "The Map of Chaos"). It's fantasy-like which isn't really my genre but I did enjoy this trilogy. So, maybe it is something for you. I hope so.

  13. I want to read Hilary Mantel. I have enjoyed Historical Fiction more recently.

    Have a great week!

    1. If it comes to Historical Fiction, Emily, you can find tons of books that I read. Hilary Mantel is great. Same as Ken Follett. And Edward Rutherfurd. And ... oh, there are so many. In any case, I hope you enjoy some of them.

  16. Somehow, I have managed to read exactly NONE of these! I can't believe I still haven't read anything by Mantel, Follett, or McLain. I've read BELOVED and THE BEAN TREES, so at least I've read some Morrison and Kingsolver. I really need to get on the ball! Ha ha.

    Happy TTT!

    1. Happens to me all the time, Susan. Most of these authors are total favourites of mine, especially Follett, Kingsolver and Morrison, great authors. But also the others who haven't written as many. I can highly recommend these books. But I know you read a lot and we can't read them all.

  17. While I'm familiar with almost all the authors, I haven't read those specific books you picked. Hard to believe! Great list.

    1. Well, there's one simple explanation, Terrie: too many books, too little time. I have not read all the books by most of those authors even though I'd love to.

  20. Your blog seems to belong to those where I cannot comment, there is a problem with some WordPress blogs, I hope they will repair that soon.

Anyway, this is what I wanted to write:

I've read Ballet Shoes, My Sister's Keeper, The Book Thief and The Hunger Games. I'm not a huge Jodi Picoult fan but I did enjoy the others, even the last one.

    Thanks for visiting.
