Top Ten Tuesday ~ Books I Read In One Sitting

"Top Ten Tuesday" is an original feature/weekly meme created on the blog "The Broke and the Bookish". This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists at "The Broke and the Bookish".

It is now hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl.

Since I am just as fond of them as they are, I jump at the chance to share my lists with them! Have a look at their page, there are lots of other bloggers who share their lists here.

This week's topic is: Books I Read In One Sitting (or would have if I had the time)

To come up with a list for this, I went through my novellas and chose the ones I really liked a lot, so everyone could read them in one sitting. There are a lot of large books I'd love to read in one go but when it comes to about five hundred pages, it gets tough. I do need my sleep. Also, I like to linger over a story.

Anyway, these are the books that are short that made it to my Top Twelve.

Aleichem, Sholem (שלום עליכם) "Tevye the Dairyman" (Hebrew: טוביה החולב, Yiddish: Tevye der milkhiker, טבֿיה דער מילכיקער)  - 1894-1916

Bâ, Mariama "So Long a Letter" (French: Une si longue lettre) - 1979

Coelho, Paulo "The Alchemist: A Fable about Following Your Dream" (Portuguese: O Alquimista) - 1988

Dostoevsky, Fyodor "The Gambler" (Russian: Igrok - Игрок) - 1866

Ephron, Nora "When Harry Met Sally ..." - 1990

Guo, Xiaolu (郭小橹) "Language" - 2017

James, Henry
"Daisy Miller" - 1879

Mann, Thomas "A Man and his Dog" (aka Bashan and I) (German: Herr und Hund. Ein Idyll) - 1918

Morrison, Toni "Home" - 2012

Schmitt, Éric-Emmanuel "Monsieur Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran" (French: Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran) - 1999

Storm, Theodor "Paul the Puppeteer" (German: Pole Poppenspäler) - 1874

Wells, H. G. "The Time Machine" - 1895

    1. Thanks, Kat. I just was on your page since your post turned up on my list. We crossed each other. Funny.

I have read a few other books by Henry James, he's not my favourite author from that time but he adds to the experience because he sees it with different eyes. I read H.G. Wells because I had read "The Map of Time" by Félix J. Palma (link in the "The Time Machine" review) and it was good to do that together.

I love Nora Ephron (hence a link to more of her books) and also the movie. And Rob Reiner, the director. So, I had to read the book though it would normally a little too chick-lit-y for me. Have you ever watched the film?

  2. I had no idea that When Harry Met Sally was a book. I’d only ever heard of (but never watched) the film. Neat.

    1. Thanks, Astilbe. As I said to Kat ^^, I love Nora Ephron, Rob Reiner and the movie, so I had to read the book.

If you've never seen the film, you really ought to. It's hilarious.

  3. What did you think of Home? I’ve heard good things about that one.

    1. Home, well, it probably depends what kind of books you like to read. Toni Morrison's are usually quite disturbing, she touches subjects that people like to disregard. I have liked all her books so far.

    1. Thanks, JJ. If you scroll up, you will see that you are not the only one. A lot of books are published after a film has become successful but there are probably even more films nowadays that are made after a successful book.

I really love Nora Ephron, her films AND her books.

  5. Great list of books! I never realized that When Harry Met Sally was a book. I love the movie, so now I have to read the book.

    1. Thanks Pam, as I just said above ^^, most people didn't seem to know. The book is really just the same as the movie but I loved going through it again. Also mentioned the ice cream order in my post. LOL

  6. I'm not a short story fan and I tend to overlook novellas as well. I'm not sure why. I do like long novels that I can really sink my teeth into, but I also enjoy page-turners. I'm just a reading enigma! LOL.

    Happy TTT!

    1. So do I, Susan. I really prefer long, chunky books. My motto: A book only starts at page 500. LOL

But I read a lot, so it wasn't a problem finding a few shorter ones.

  7. I recently added a lot of Vintage Minis to my TBR with Language being of particular interest. I must get a copy soon. Happy reading. My TTT https://readwithstefani.com/romance-books-to-read-in-one-sitting/

    1. Thanks, Stefani. I love books about language, even though there are only 32 on my label but it's always great to see other titles, so I'll have to check out your copies.

  8. I've heard of Henry James and Nora Ephron, but don't think any of the rest of the names are familiar. :)

    1. Thanks, Rissi. I'm sure you've heard of some of the other authors, quite a few of them are Nobel Prize winners, that's probably why I read their short stories as I usually prefer larger books. But then again, I never heard of any of your authors (not on first sight), so we probably read different kind of books. It still is fun checking out your blog.

  9. I enjoyed reading Wells' The Time Machine.
I'd like to read Language by Xiaolu Guo (A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers).

Here's my Top Ten Tuesday list!

    1. Thanks, Lectrice. I'm not much into science fiction but I really enjoyed The Time Machine, too. And Language seems to be the book a few of the other bloggers want to read, as well. It is an interesting little one.

    1. Thanks, Emma. Many know the movie but you are probably right, not many know the book. I also loved the book, that humour is priceless.

    1. Thanks, Deb. I try not to repeat myself too often in these lists though sometimes it's unavoidable. One of my blogger friends once said it's probably because I'm not American that I have other books than many since the majority of the bloggers (at least the ones I know) are American. Well, I always like to read around the world, I guess that helps, as well.

It's always a pleasure to watch your blog, though, it's also different. Lovely different.

    1. I think you would definitely enjoy some of them, Sarah, like "So long a letter", "The Alchemist" and "Language". And if you never heard of "When Harry Met Sally", you ought to watch the movie. It's soooo funny.
