100 Best Books Written by Women
I often see interesting lists on other blogs and if I like them, I try to share them, as well. This one, I found on Brona's Books @ This Reading Life who had seen it on Paula's blog @ Book Jotter. The list was made by Good Housekeeping and there are a lot of interesting books there. While I don't agree that they all should be on that list (*), there are still quite a few I haven't read yet. 41 so far, plus 17 where I read at least one other book by that author (which I have added in brackets).

As so often with these lists, there are very few international books (only three!) and I always feel sorry for my English speaking friends that they don't get such a broad impact as we do. I know that many of them would like to read more books from other countries but don't have the chance.
I also miss some other great authors, Nobel Prize or winners of other prestigious awards, even English speaking authors. South African Nadine Gordimer comes to mind. Or Pearl S. Buck who wrote great literature about China.
Maybe I should put together a list of non-English books that are worth reading. Mind you, you will find a lot of them already on my Reading List.
That's a fun list. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joy. I thought so, too. There are some great books there that I still have to read.
DeleteI've read 2, 4, 13, 25, 27, 38, 42, 56, 58, 72, 75, 78 and 99 - so, 13 in total. I own 1, 9, 19, 29, 31, 34, 41, 45, 49, 57 and 74 - so, 11 more. Not *too* bad [grin] I'm always on the lookout for female authors so THANKS for this list. Now I just need to *read* some more of them... [lol]
ReplyDeleteSo, I only have to read "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie", then I've read all of yours. I would need need 1, 9, 31, 41, 45, 47, and 57. I have 74 on my TBR list. But it's not a competition. I have a few more that I will read next. Looking forward to your reviews. Thanks, Kitten.
DeleteI read 'The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie' *years* ago (pre-Blog) after seeing the movie version and remember enjoying it. I think I should manage one or two off this list before years end - maybe!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kitten. I read neither the book nor saw the movie. I really should one day. Would you recommend to read the book first and then the movie or vice-versa?
DeleteI don't think it matters hugely. From memory the book is more detailed, but they often have to leave things out of plots in movies because of time constraints. I keep meaning to read more Muriel Spark. She was a very prolific author!
DeleteI often find I don't like the movie when I read the book first because they leave so much out or - even worse - change it completely. But yeah, I will see what I get first, Kitten. Thanks.
DeleteWhat a list! I have read 29 of them, and I see many of my favourite authors there. Also books that are on my list to be read.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a great list, Lisbeth, therefore I just had to share it. You know how much I love lists anyway.
DeleteNeat! I am currently listening to my 33rd book from that list - title #77.
ReplyDeleteOMG, you absolutely need to read Rebecca!
Thanks, Emma. I finally got a hold of a copy and will read it soon.
